A five-member Pakistani delegation will hold talks on transboundary water issues and controversial hydropower projects with Indian officials in New Delhi on May 30-31, , Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Waters Syed Muhammad Mehr Ali Shah said on Saturday
Pakistani delegation led by Syed Mehr Ali Shah will reach India via Wagha International Border on Sunday.
This is the second Pakistani Delegation to visit India in the last few weeks. Earlier this month. a delegation visited Delhi to attend Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting.
“There will be talks on the sharing of flood forecast data while the PCIW (Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Water) annual report will also be discussed during the negotiations,” Indus Water Commissioner Syed Mehr Ali said.
He said the Pakistani delegation will not visit under construction Pakal Dul and Lower Kalnai hydro power projects in Indian-Occupied Kashmir but other projects will come under discussion.
The commissioner said that Pakistan had always insisted on the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty and raised its voice on India’s behaviour in a timely manner.
In March, Indian delegation led by Indus Water Commissioner PK Saxena had visited Pakistani capital, Islamabad to discuss water issues with their Pakistani counterparts.
Under the relevant provisions of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, the meeting takes place alternatively in Pakistan and India annually.
Under the Indus water treaty , waters of three Eastern Rivers – Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi have been allocated to India while the waters of three Western rivers – Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab go to Pakistan.
