Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has appealed to all Pakistanis especially those living abroad, to financially contribute to construction of water reservoirs in the country as these are vital for economic development.
In a message to the nation, Imran Khan asked overseas Pakistanis, especially those living in European countries and the United States to contribute at least one thousand dollars in the fund created by Chief Justice of Pakistan.
“Pakistanis working in the Middle East and other countries can also contribute according to their capacity,” Premier Imran Khan said.
He said Prime Minister’s fund for dam would be now part of Chief Justice’s fund and both will be merged.
Imran Khan lauded the Chief Justice for taking initiative for construction of dams which was primary responsibility of the politicians. The Prime Minister said Pakistan could face drought like conditions by 2025 if dams are not constructed now.
Diamer-Bhasha Dam, the water reservoir Pakistan wants to construct over river Indus in its northern areas-Gilgit Balistan, is a concrete-filled gravity dam. Its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani of Pakistan on 18 October 2011. Upon completion, Diamer-Bhasha Dam would be the highest roller-compacted concrete (RCC) dam in the world. The dam site is situated near a place called “Bhasha” in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer District, hence the name.
