Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore has received over 250 millimeters (10 inches) of rains, an unprecedented downpour in decades that resulted in the killing of 6 persons and inundation of most of the parts of the metropolis.
“ This is record rain in a short span of time since 1990s. The downpour in Lahore and other upper parts of the country is likely to continue during next 24 hours,” says Muhammad Riaz, Chief Meteorologist.
According to Rescue 1122 emergency service, two people were killed as the roof of their warehouse collapsed in Gumti bazaar owing to heavy downpour. Another person died of electrocution in China Scheme area of Gujar Pura. Three people were reported killed due to electrocution during the heavy rainfall.
The heavy rains have badly affected the electricity transmission system in the second biggest city of Pakistan with leaving more than 200 feeders dead short.
According to Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) officials, work is underway to bring electricity feeders back online.
Moreover, the flow of traffic was severely affected as water accumulated in low-lying areas especially the underpasses.
As the rains continue lashing Indian-occupied Kashmir and upper parts of Pakistan, the flow of water in the rivers and their tributaries is on the rise. Pakistan Flood Forecasting Centre has issued warning about the medium flood in the hill torrents of Southern Punjab districts of D.G. Khan and Rajanpur during next three days.
