Indian spy, Hamid Nehal Ansari has been released from a prison in Pakistan’s north-western city of Peshawar after the completion of his three-year term, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesman on Monday.
“The convicted spy Hamid Nehal Ansari will be repatriated to India upon completion of his sentence,” the spokesman , Dr. Muhammad Faisal said.
Ansari had illegally entered Pakistan and was involved in anti-state crimes.
In a tweet, FO Spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal also revealed that Ansari was involved in forging official documents.
Ansari, who was held in Peshawar jail, had filed a petition with the high court in November 2017 requesting that he must not be treated as a spy as he was not involved in “anti-state activities”.
The petition was filed by senior lawyer Qazi Muhammad Anwar and sought remission in his sentence.
The petition stated that Ansari was not involved in any anti-state activities in Pakistan, but he had entered the country without proper documents. Therefore, he had the right of remission in the sentence after spending a long time in jail.
Hamid Ansari was arrested in Pakistan after he was accused of illegally entering the country from Afghanistan to meet a girl he had befriended online.
The youth belonging to Western Indian city of Mumbai, who was sent to three years’ imprisonment in Pakistan for illegally entering the country in 2012, is expected to be released on Tuesday, according to media reports.
On December 15, 2015, the 33-year-old Mumbai resident was awarded three years’ imprisonment by a military court for allegedly possessing a fake Pakistani identity card, and was sent to Peshawar Central Jail.
