Pakistan, US officials reach understanding on fight against terrorism

Pakistan and the United States have resolved to act against all militant groups that target Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan, according to Pakistan’s Foreign office.

In a statement Thursday, the Foreign office spokesman said the understanding was reached during a meeting between visiting U.S. acting Assistant Secretary of State Alice Wells and Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua.

The visit came days after Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi traveled to the U.S. which was later termed a private one, and during which he met with U.S. officials in an effort to improve ties with Washington.

“This is her second visit to Pakistan in 2018. The aim of the visit is to review the entire gamut of bilateral relations”,  Foreign Office spokesman Dr. Muhammad Faisal said.

The issues discussed at the meeting included- Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts and FATF. Both the sides also talked about the  regional situation in Afghanistan in the wake of President Trump’s South Asia & Afghanistan policy.

Ambassador Wells is due to meet a few other senior officials in the next few days.

“The two countries are maintaining regular engagement to address the common challenges and take the relationship forward,” the foreign office spokesman said.
